DIY Brochures

Aand welcome back! :D On Tuesday, we had another in-class activity. Designing a brochure layout within an hour. We were allowed to go outside of class to hunt for materials for our brochure. Having to work in pairs, I teamed up with Sam and went in search of random text materials to use for our brochure. Since we were undecided on what topic to use, we decided to look for materials first to have a clear picture of what we we could do with them. Our search brought us to the administrative office where there were TONS of brochures for visitors and students -it was a goldmine of materials! :D

Upon returning to class, we decided to go with the topic on food as we had alot of pictures of food and culinary students. It was to be a six-page brochure, because we thought it would look more brochure-ish that way.

Then we went on to cutting out articles to be used and various food pictures. It was all a whole lot easier to cut with the art knife (if i'm not mistaken, I think that's what it's called)

These are the completed pages of the brochure:

After that, everyone had to go up and present our works to the class.

also taken from Miss Lisa's blog

Our colour theme was mainly red, yellow and white. It's important to have a colour theme or else the colours in the brochure would clash and make it seem all wrong. Everyone else had really interesting designs and I think I have a clearer picture on how to design a brochure after looking at everyone else's work. It was pretty amazing that some of them came up with professional looking ones as well. ;)

Paper Cutouts

Haiiiii~ After our grid presentation Miss Lisa decided it best to show us the correct way of using a blade, since sometimes we end up cutting out furry-looking mounting boards xD So as usual, she showed us a slide show (of awesomeness! :O) ; examples of paper cutouts. It was so nice to see, and most, or rather, all of them, seemed like it took a lot of never ending effort and patience.

Then comes our next assignment, yup, paper cutting!! :D We have to do 2 paper cutouts: one with symmetry & balance and another with dominance, weight & space. I've never tried paper cutouts before this assignment so I'm nervous it might not be good. Dx Well, obviously by now I've already cut them out, but i'll just post pictures of my paper cutout plans first. Leaving the big revealing for after I show them to Miss Lisa and see what she thinks of it. Sooo, it'll be in the next post i guess :P

I think you can guess which is which:

The butterfly cutout is one piece of paper folded in half so it ends up equal on both sides.

The blade i used is not the usual standard blade but the kind that has a pen shaped base. Kind of like a surgeon's blade since Miss Lisa mentioned that it's a lot easier to use than the usual kind:
Yea, its definitely a whole lot more flexible than a normal blade :]

Well, that's all for now. Till next time ;O

Grid Assignment - Finito!

Based on my last blog post, i had to do a few grid layouts as my assignment. And... i. am. done! I also had to do a presentation on it but i'm sorry i do not have any photos >_< of the presentation. So here are photos of my completed works instead :D

This is my column grid:
Miss Lisa said theres too much space surrounding the layout, and she's right D:

My golden ratio grid:
See theres words left hanging around the picture on the left? It actually wasn't like that when i edited it in microsoft... I don't know how it turned out like that after it went through the printer at the stationary shop ._.

And my baseline grid:
The problem with this one? ↑ Please refer to the next picture ↓ :
As you can see, I have no idea how to use microsoft word 2010... =_=

Really, i didn't know how to make the words NOT spread out. It was frustrating working on this assignment, just a little. If i typed everything out from scratch it probably wouldn't turn out like this, but i used a dummy text generator using lorem ipsum words. Basically it's gibberish. So it was all ctrl c + ctrl v or in other words, copy paste xD

I guess I'm not really that familiar with creating grid layouts but after watching everyone else's works and seeing Miss Lisa correct us all, and see one or two examples by our classmates that were top notch, I think I'm starting to get a better picture of this grid layout business now. :]

All About Grids

Grids - "a series of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines that are used to structure content for the placement of any design element"

In a way, kind of like how a puzzle looks like. Without the little hands and legs sticking out of each piece of puzzle. Or how a bingo layout looks like. Oh, oops those i suppose are examples of grids :P

During PoD class, Miss Lisa explained to us about the Grid Anatomy, Hierarchy used in them, Grid Variations and how to use grids through a slideshow.
There are a few grid variations such as rules of thirds, golden ratio, columns and baseline grid.
→ Rules of thirds is a 3x3 layout of vertical and horizontal lines. Used as a general composition rule in most/all designs
Rules of third
→ Golden ratio has a vertical line with something like a 1:3 ratio. Used for website designs

Golden ratio
→ Columns are vertical lines with space in between. Used in magazine and newspapers

Columns
→ Baseline grid is horizontal lines, like in a notebook. Used also in magazine and newspapers

Baseline grid
^ the photos are images i found off google :D
In the Hierarchy, the sizes would go in descending order as: header > sub-heading > body copy

After that, we were told to do an in-class activity using newspaper articles that we were told to bring as examples of grids.

Later, to better understand grids, we did another in-class activity: designing our own gridwork on an a4 paper- one for a magazine article and one for a poster.

♦ my 1st magazine article attempt: a disaster. :( the image and sub-header shouldn't intersect

♦ my poster gridwork. the darker lined sub-header is a correction

♦ my magazine article gridwork. much better than the 1st >_<

Then, we were given an assignment to create 2 variations of each of the grid layouts based on the golden ratio grid, columns and baseline grid. And mount it on black mounting board.

Presentation Results!! (furniture design group work)

Why hello there~ Sooo, we did the group presentation on Monday, i'll just mention this now: PoD classes are every Monday and Tuesday so my blog posts will be about those 2 classes' days. Before class started that day, we had quite some time to do finishing touches to our project in PoD class and that's what we did. Apparently, the other groups thought so too, it was fun. :) to have everyone in class doing finishing touches to our projects together.

CapFe's members! hiii~ :D

Aaand, i have to say i was quite impressed by what all the other groups did :O Our group had our presentation last so it was interesting to see the other groups' presentation first.

I strangely have an urge to post lots of pictures today... i don't know why. That's why i'll take this opportunity to post what the other groups did. ;3 Well, at least it gives me an excuse to post pictures of everyone in my class on this blog *MUAHAHAHAHAA* >:D

SCADEZ with their standing lamp
Urban Eyes with their lamp, throne chair & footstool

Young & Wild with their lamp & swing
PISD with their modular single seater, side table/chaise & foot stool
And that's all the groups in PoD class :D It's sad to say... but our umbrella holder seemed a little incomplete, as Miss Lisa says. The minute she mentioned this i realized that she was right, but what could we do? We didn't have alot of decos to stick on. D: But the overall's good :) On a side note, these pictures were all taken from Miss Lisa's blog so thank you and credits to Miss Lisa for the pictures :D

Furniture Design Update

Welcome back to another episode of LiWei's Not So Random Blog Posts :D ...okay that was random ._. *cough* Moving on! Our tv-bookshelf idea got scrapped since a whole lot of problems popped up right before we started working on it.
• Problem 1: Breaking the glass seemed too dangerous as we're inexperienced and have little to no resources for keeping our safety while breaking the glass and the shards fly everywhere like a shrapnel bomb.
• Problem 2: We have zero experience with dealing with the wires and electronics inside the tv.nuff said.

And that's how we got here. This point right here → ○ ← . And what is this point u ask? Simple. It's our new furniture: ♪dan da da daaa♫ an umbrella holder!! *inserts picture below* There.

An umbrella holder! :D
The umbrella holder was actually a back-up plan we had just in case anything went wrong or if we needed another idea to present, that was it. We didn't decide exactly how or what was gonna be used to make it since it was just back-up but the end product is pretty good if you ask me. ;)

I'll be honest and say i can't say for sure how it got to this point → ◘ ← (the point before → ○ ←) since i was absent the first day we started. How come i wasn't there? Long story short: i forgot we made plans a week before to go shopping for materials on that certain day and they couldn't reach me because of a certain sugar-honey-ice-tea -ey phone [bad phone that had to be sent to the shop 5 times within this year (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)] So when i got to Aina's house the day after this was what i saw:

i have no idea how it got to this point o_O
I know i apologized already but again i say: i'm really sorry for not being there that first day guys DD; I feel like i did so little to contribute to our furniture just from being absent that one day :( So then me, Lisa and Aina (Zu tried her best to make it but couldn't without any transport, K and Hoi Jun were busy) got to gluing the things together. Oh, pardon me. That sounded wrong, by things i meant what used to be cd racks (the red things in the picture) and over turned table legs (the metallic gold things). Sorry if that sounded wrong but i dont know what else to call them as i have so little expanse in vocabulary D:

Well, i guess that's it. :3 now all that's left is the finishing touches like decorations to make it seem steampunk-ish (yes, we're still going with that theme >:DD ) and finalizing the video editing. Then we're done! D-O-N-E yaaaaaayyyy!! xD

Mai 2nd Assignment: finished video clip

Muahahahahaa!!~ pardon the evil laugh, i just feel satisfied having done finished an assignment. The sense of accomplishment is overwhelming. nahh im kidding xD but it sure does feel good..

I actually took all the photos in half a day, only around 10-12 photos were taken during the 20-snapshot hour ...and i didn't even use half of them =_= Anyway, in that 1 day I took around 110 photos in total which i have to say is a shocking amount o_o''

After all the trouble of sorting them out, I managed to narrow it down to 99 photos. An accomplishment i would say but then my brother, who i asked to help me with the video clip editing, nagged at me about wasting his time and taking way too many pictures and all that. D: brothers. what can you do about them. :|

So here's the video :D -tada- not that impressive but yeah, I was really REALLY tired having done the whole thing in 1 day. Taking the photos and the editing. Kudos to my brother for picking out the song and doing most of the editing while I laid half dead from exhaustion on the sofa. >_<

Looking back at it i realized i forgot to put 2 words at the end: the end. lol. so... THE END :D
btw just in case of copyrights, I DO NOT OWN THE SONG USED IN THIS VIDEO. there. thank you :D

Furniture Design Tutorial

Hi there! :D I know its a little late to post this but better late than never they always say :P

Hi Miss Lisa :D

During the tutorial, we presented our ideas about our tv-bookshelf to Miss Lisa. Oh, i almost forgot to mention this: our group member Priya had sadly, moved over to another group, bringing us a new group member, Hoi Jun. Shortly after the group member-exchange, we came up with our group name *drumroll* ...CapFe!!~ it's actually short for Captain America & Iron Man where Cap = Captain and Fe = the scientific name for iron. Hence, CapFe was born! xD We all agreed it was a good group name since everyone was a fan of The Avengers.

Sketches and notes done by Zu and Aina

Since our color theme was basically yellow/gold and red (the colors of Iron Man >:D), Miss Lisa suggested we go with a steampunk theme for our furniture as the colors would match with it being a tv and all.

Now that got us really excited :D steampunk!! I've always admired steampunk designs xD Making a steampunk themed furniture would be just so awesome. So i searched for steampunk pictures while writing this post and here are a few pictures that just seemed very steampunk-ish:

A steampunk-themed clock
A very beautiful steampunk watch. I want it~ Dx
Steampunk electric guitar
It's a bluetooth!! so cool~ :O
Iron Man steampunk style
I wonder if that was too many pictures o_o ...kinda got carried away >_< I actually wanted to add more but... yeah, dont wanna spam pictures here >_>

Assignment 2

Last Monday, 27th August, we were given a task to go around campus taking photos of a subject matter to our liking using a frame made from black mounting board that we were asked to prepare during the holidays. We could take our photos using either a camera or our phones. My phone has horrible quality (very ==) so of course I used a digital camera.

So off we went, on our little excursion around campus randomly taking snapshots of things that came to mind as photograph-worthy. We were given around an hour to take around 20 snapshots.

Everyone hard at work with the assignment :D

So then we fooled around, taking pictures that played with perspective. ;)
I apologize for the bad angle this was taken in but everyone was tired and I'm not very good at this perspective snapshot thing. Yet. xD

Everyone's frames. Thank you guys for posing :D

Upon returning to class, we were then asked to take 30 more photos for the next few days and create a short movie clip to present in the next class. Sounds tiring? yes. Did i take enough photos? it's a work in progress... Can i pull this movie clip thing off? meh, that's a maybe :/
